Please come back often, as we are always buying more goodies to list on ebay. This listing is for a vintage, nearly antique, either 1928 or 1938 ladies, Bulova watch. This watch was made before 1949, when Bulova began using date codes for their watches. During the era this watch was made, Bulova used small symbols on the movement, like a square, triangle, or in the case of this watch, a small crescent shape, or you could also call it a moon shape. I checked the Bulova date code database and the crescent shape was used during the years 1928 and 1938. Note, this symbol stands for the specific, individual years of 1928 and 1938, not for the 10 year period that spans from 1928 to 1938. If I were to choose which year I think the watch’s production is more likely, I’d choose 1928, as the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles were extremely popular during this era. While still popular in the 1930s, styles were evolving, and by the end of the decade ladies’ watches had taken on a more simplified, streamlined version of the Deco design, as opposed to the very ornate design of this watch. This watch sort of marries the Art Deco/Nouveau movements in that the shape of the case is more Art Deco, but Art Nouveau motifs are etched into the bezel. The watch case has a hinged caseback that folds open and snaps shut. This was also more common with the 1920s watches. By the 1930s, the detached, snap-back caseback had become more the norm. The inside of this watch’s caseback reads: Bulova, 14K Gold Filled, New York. The serial # is 9188878. The watch’s movement is a 6AF and has 15 jewels. The case measures 26 mm in length and 15 mm in width. The watch case is in just gorgeous condition with very little wear. It’s nice, shiny, and beautifully adorned with etched scroll along the sides and on the bezel. The watch crystal has a few scuffs on it but is still plenty clear to view the dial through. The adhesive that holds the crystal in place, however, has yellowed over the years, so there’s some slight yellow residue along the edges of the crystal. I discovered this while inspecting the watch under the magnification of a jeweler’s loop, so it’s not noticeable to the naked eye, and it doesn’t make the watch unsuitable to wear just as it is. The main sign of age for this watch is its dial, which has darkened and developed a bit of a patina over the years. In contrast, the gold lettering, numbers, and the decorative, black stencil on the dial have faded over the years, making it a bit hard to tell the time at first glance. However, it also adds character to the watch and really distinguishes it from reproductions. In my opinion, it gives the watch an heirloom quality. The band on this watch is a gold filled, expandable band by Speidel. While still vintage, I don’t believe this was the watch’s original band. Watches from the era in which this one was made usually have a decorative, bracelet style band with a clasp at the back. The current band looks more midcentury. Though not original, it’s still a very nice band and in pristine condition. It’s a larger sized band. Expandable bands, of course, can stretch to accommodate almost any size wrist, but when they snap back to form, the unstretched size is often quite small. This band measures 6 inches in length, unstretched, and when you add the length of the watch to this the watch and band measure over 7 inches around. If this is too large for the buyer, I have a number of lady’s new-old-stock watch bands, and a smaller sized band can be negotiated into the sell. I don’t have the expertise to change out the bands, though, so this will be up to the new owner. The watch is running at the time of writing this listing, and I’ve included video to verify this, but I can make no guarantees about its future working condition. This is a nearly 100-year-old timepiece and I know nothing of its history or when it was last serviced. There are dates inscribed inside the case, so it has been serviced during its life span. The dates are just hard to read. Because this is such an old timepiece, the new owner should factor repair and servicing costs into their decision to buy or not. You are buying this watch AS IS, so be sure to carefully view all photos and watch the video, which shows the movement in motion. This is kind of a thing of beauty, actually, as the mechanics are so small and so precise! The watch doesn’t have a second hand, so showing the movement was the only way to video the watch to verify its working condition for buyers. When the watch sells, I will check again before shipping to see that it still runs. Before I package the watch, I will take a second video for my records as proof of it working at the time of shipping. If I discover the watch has stopped working while in storage, I will let the buyer know and he or she may choose to cancel the purchase or renegotiate the price at this time. Once the watch leaves my possession at the post office, the sell is final with no returns. This is a unique, very rare, very old watch, and it will make a lovely addition to one’s vintage watch collection. Pictures are to be considered as part of the description.
