The frequency of the AC input determines the operation frequency of the toroidal transformer. For low-frequency applications (50 Hz to 400 Hz), laminated iron or iron powder cores are used. For high-frequency applications (tens of kHz to hundreds of MHz), ferrite cores are used. The shape of the core cross-section impacts toroidal transformer performance. Common shapes include circular, square, and rectangular. Circular cross-sections offer the highest efficiency but are more expensive, while square and rectangular shapes are less efficient but more cost-effective.
